Polybutylene Plumbing

Polybutylene plumbing was installed in many homes in the 1980s and 1990s. It is a grey or blue-grey plastic material. Problems have developed in the "crimp" connectors used to connect the pipes together. These crimps can degrade over time and cause leaks, sometimes in concealed spaces such as behind walls or under floors. Several class action lawsuits were previously against the manufacturers of this type of plumbing.

If you suspect that you have this type of plumbing in your home, you should have your home evaluated by a licensed plumber to determine whether it should be replaced.
